Overview
Right across Queensland, the Queensland Government is ensuring that Queenslanders have access to health services when you need them.
Recent new and expanded health services include:
Hospital transit lounges
We’re investing $80 million to create new and expanded hospital transit lounges to free up hospital beds and reduce ambulance ramping.
Transit lounges provide patients with a dedicated space to wait for admission, transfer, discharge or outpatient appointments. The new and expanded transit lounges will be available at:
- Royal Brisbane Women and Children’s Hospital
- Prince Charles Hospital
- Logan Hospital
- Ipswich Hospital
- Redland City Hospital
- Gladstone Hospital
- Rockhampton Hospital
- Mackay Hospital
- Townsville Hospital
- Cairns Hospital
Elective surgery waitlist
We’re stabilising the elective surgery waitlist through the $100 million Surgery Connect Surge investment – referring public surgery patients across the State to the private sector at no charge.
It means Queenslanders waiting for procedures in high-demand specialties such as ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, urology and orthopedics will be able to access treatment sooner.
Perinatal mental health beds
We're delivering additional perinatal mental health beds to support mums, babies and their families. The more than $160 million investment will see beds added to hospitals across Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Logan and Ipswich. More than $7 million has also been allocated to Peach Tree Perinatal Wellness to expand their peer-led mental health and psychosocial support services, opening new centres in Cairns, Townsville, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.
New Ambulance Operations Centre
A new Queensland Ambulance Service communications facility has opened at the Gold Coast with the capacity to manage hundreds of thousands of Triple Zero calls each year, and coordinate ambulance dispatch across one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions. This will ensure faster care is delivered for those who need it.
New CT and MRI machines
We’re investing $276 million to increase medical imaging capacity, with new diagnostic imaging technology to be rolled out at 11 locations across Queensland.
Six new MRI machines and nine CT scanners will be installed as part of the program, taking pressure off facilities to help deliver healthcare when Queenslanders need it:
- Ayr Hospital (CT)
- Beaudesert Hospital (CT)
- Brighton Health Campus (MRI and CT)
- Cairns South Health Facility (MRI and CT)
- Charleville Hospital (CT)
- Dalby Hospital (CT)
- Eight Mile Plains Satellite Health Centre (MRI and CT)
- Gatton Hospital (CT)
- Hervey Bay Hospital (MRI)
- Redland Hospital (MRI)
- Southport Health Precinct (MRI and CT)
Free Health Kindy Kids program
The Healthy Kindy Kids program is delivering free healthcare for young Queenslanders, with Kindy-aged children able to access free vision, hearing, speech and language screens to help identify concerns early and ensure they have the right start on their educational journey.
